Microsoft Excel – Formatting Data and Formula

Now that you are familiar with the excel interface and its basic functions, the next step of learning is to understand the strength of MS Excel in which it can perform calculations that you can format. And of course the most important is that you have the knowledge on basic mathematical knowledge and the understanding of calculations on how the mathematical operations work.

In Microsoft excel, we can enter data into the cell, this can be numbers or mathematical formulas. You can enter data directly on cell but if you want to perform a mathematical formula, you should start with an equal (=) sign followed by the formula.

You can make use of the following major mathematical operations.

Addition (+), Subtraction (-), Multiplication (*), Division (/) and the Exponential (^)
Now let us apply the basic mathematical Data Calculations in Excel

ADDITION

Just follow the guide
  1. In cell A1 type the word “Add” (without quote)
  2. Then hit “Enter” on your keyboard
  3. In cell A2 type “1” (without quote)
  4. Again Press Enter.
  5. In cell A3 type “1” (without quote)
  6. Press Enter again.
  7. Now let us perform the Addition by typing “=A2+A3”
  8. Hit enter and you will see the result.

SUBTRACTION

Just follow the guide

  1. On your keyboard press F5
  2. Shown in the picture type in B1 as your reference
  3. Upon pressing enter, you will be moved to the cell B1
  4. Type the text “Subtract”
  5. Press Enter
  6. In cell B2 type “6”
  7. Press enter
  8. In cell B3 type “3”
  9. Press Enter.
  10. In B4 type the formula “=B2-B3”
  11. Enter and the result will be displayed.

You can use different mathematical equations by starting with the equal sign then performing the desired function.
